Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is known for its peaceful boardwalk, towering cypress trees and glimpses of Florida wildlife. But after the sun disappears, the sanctuary becomes an entirely different place.

During a recent guided night walk, I spent a little over two hours exploring the swamp in near darkness—and discovering everything that comes alive after most visitors have gone home.

Entering the Swamp After Dark

Walking into a Florida swamp at night feels very different from visiting during the day. The familiar wooden boardwalk seemed to disappear into the darkness ahead of us, surrounded by shadowy trees and the sounds of the swamp.

We used red lights as we walked. The deep red glow illuminated just enough of the boardwalk and surrounding trees to guide us forward while helping us search for animals, insects and the reflected shine of tiny eyes hiding in the darkness.

Every few steps brought another reason to stop and look more closely.

Discovering the Swamp’s Nighttime Residents

Some of the creatures were easy to spot once someone pointed them out. Others blended so perfectly into the bark and leaves that we could have walked directly past them.

During the walk, we found fishing spiders clinging to tree trunks, banana spiders resting near their webs, walking sticks disguised as twigs and praying mantises almost disappearing into the surrounding vegetation. We also spotted frogs perched quietly among the leaves.

The fishing spiders were especially impressive. Seeing one stretched across a tree trunk in the red light gave us a much better appreciation for its size—and made the dark forest feel even more alive.

Although the spiders may sound intimidating, the walk did not feel like a haunted attraction. It felt adventurous and fascinating, like being given temporary access to a hidden world that exists in the swamp every night.

Seeing Lichen Under Ultraviolet Light

One of the most unexpected parts of the experience came when ultraviolet lights were used to examine the trees.

During the day, lichen can be easy to overlook. Under UV light, however, patches on the tree bark suddenly appeared in glowing shades of yellow and blue. The transformation was beautiful and almost otherworldly.

The combination of red light, ultraviolet color and deep darkness made the cypress swamp look completely different from the place visitors see during normal daytime hours.

A Different Side of Florida

Florida’s natural areas are filled with life during the day, but a nighttime walk reveals how much activity remains hidden from us.

The experience required patience. We moved slowly, listened carefully and searched the tree trunks, railings and leaves for small details. That slower pace was part of what made the walk so memorable.

Instead of hurrying along the boardwalk to reach the next overlook, we focused on what was directly around us. A tiny movement, an unusual shape or a flash of reflected light could reveal another creature hiding in plain sight.

By the end of the two-hour walk, the swamp no longer felt empty or silent. It felt crowded with life.

Would You Explore a Florida Swamp at Night?

A guided night walk at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Southwest Florida’s most remarkable natural places after dark.

If you enjoy wildlife, photography, unusual Florida adventures or simply seeing familiar places from a different perspective, this is an experience worth watching for. Night programs may be offered only on selected dates, so check directly with the sanctuary for current schedules, availability a

nd visitor requirements before making plans.

Bring your curiosity—and be prepared to look closely. The most interesting discoveries may be the ones hiding right beside the boardwalk.
