The Celery Fields: Where Sarasota Comes to Run, Wander and Watch Wildlife

Some places seem to bring an entire community outdoors. The Celery Fields in Sarasota is one of them.

When I arrived, a running team was practicing on the hill. Nearby, other visitors were walking, jogging and repeatedly making their way up and down the steep slope for exercise. It felt less like a traditional park and more like a natural gathering place—somewhere people come to challenge themselves, enjoy the view or simply spend a little time outside.

The Unexpected Hill in the Middle of Sarasota

Florida is known for being flat, which makes the hill at The Celery Fields especially surprising.

A winding path leads visitors toward the top, with increasingly wide views of the surrounding wetlands along the way. You do not have to be part of a running team to enjoy it. You can take your time, stop along the trail and watch the landscape unfold below you.

From the top, you can also see Big Cat Habitat next door—another unexpected sight in the middle of the Sarasota landscape.

A Quiet Place for Birdwatching

Across the street from the hill, a boardwalk and pier extend over the wetlands. This side of The Celery Fields has an entirely different feeling.

Photographers gather quietly with long lenses, waiting for birds to appear among the reeds or fly across the water. Even if you are not an experienced birdwatcher, it is the kind of place that makes you slow down and begin noticing movement throughout the marsh.

Bring binoculars or a camera if you have them, but neither is required. Sometimes simply standing quietly and watching is enough.

Watch for the Marsh Rabbits

Some of the smallest residents of The Celery Fields can be found close to the roadside.

Tiny marsh rabbits appear in the grass, often blending so well into their surroundings that they can easily be missed. Drive slowly, watch the edges of the road and give all wildlife plenty of space.

They were one of my favorite discoveries during the visit.

More Than a Walking Trail

The Celery Fields brings together several different Florida experiences in one destination:

  • A challenging hill for walking or running

  • Sweeping views from the top

  • Wetlands filled with birdlife

  • A boardwalk and observation pier

  • Wildlife photography opportunities

  • Marsh rabbits hiding along the roadside

  • A glimpse of Big Cat Habitat in the distance

It is a place for athletes, photographers, birdwatchers, families and anyone who enjoys discovering a side of Florida that cannot be found at the beach.

The Celery Fields reminded me that an adventure does not always require a long road trip. Sometimes it is waiting just beyond an ordinary Sarasota street—where runners climb, photographers wait and marsh rabbits quietly disappear into the grass.
