Alligators, wild turkeys, a breathtaking sunset and one last surprise on the road out
Some Florida adventures are carefully planned. Others unfold one remarkable moment at a time.
My evening at Myakka River State Park began almost as soon as I entered the gate. The attendant mentioned that manatees had recently been spotted in the park, giving me one more reason to keep a close watch on the water as I made my way inside.
As I crossed the first bridge, I looked down and saw alligators below. There is something unforgettable about seeing wildlife in its natural surroundings—especially when it happens within the first few minutes of arriving. I paused to take in the view, scanning the river for the manatees I had heard about and wondering what else the park might reveal before the evening was over.
I did not have to wait long.
A Road Through Wild Florida
A little farther down the road, I slowed my car to allow a flock of wild turkeys to cross in front of me. They moved together from one side to the other, completely at home in the landscape.

It was one of those simple encounters that makes you stop thinking about where you are headed and begin paying attention to everything happening around you.
That is part of what makes Myakka River State Park feel so special. The drive itself becomes part of the experience. Beneath the trees and along the water, you never know what may appear around the next bend.
A Sunset Worth Stopping For
As I continued through the park, the sun began to set. The sky filled with the most beautiful shades of gold, orange and deep red, casting a warm glow across the landscape.
Every few feet, the scene seemed to change. A different opening in the trees revealed another view. The colors deepened, the shadows stretched across the road and the entire park took on an almost magical appearance.
I kept stopping to take photographs. I would drive a short distance, see the light shift again and pull over for one more picture. Then I would move forward only to discover another view that felt even more beautiful than the last.
There are sunsets you admire for a moment, and then there are sunsets that seem to follow you down the road. This was one of those sunsets.
One Final Wildlife Encounter
Eventually, darkness settled over the park, and I turned my car around to begin the drive back toward the entrance.
Within seconds, a deer darted across the road directly in front of my car. Thankfully, I had been driving slowly. The encounter happened so quickly that it felt like one final reminder from the park: take your time, remain alert and expect the unexpected.
By the time I left, I had seen alligators resting below the bridge, watched wild turkeys cross the road, searched the water for manatees, photographed an extraordinary Florida sunset and narrowly watched a deer disappear into the darkness.
The entire evening was remarkable.
Why Myakka River State Park Belongs on Your Florida List
My visit reminded me that an adventure does not need to follow a perfect itinerary. Sometimes the most memorable experiences happen when you slow down enough to notice them.
At Myakka River State Park, the journey through the park can be every bit as memorable as the destination. Wildlife may appear without warning, the evening light can transform a familiar road and a quiet drive can become a story you will remember long after you leave.
If you visit near sunset, give yourself plenty of time. Drive slowly, watch the water, look carefully along the roadside and be prepared to stop safely when the landscape catches your attention. As daylight fades, remember that wildlife can move across the road quickly.
Most importantly, do not rush through it.
Myakka River State Park is the kind of place that rewards patience. Every turn offers another glimpse of wild Florida—and sometimes, one ordinary evening becomes completely unforgettable.
